Apa itu Arbeit Macht Frei?

Arbeit macht frei! Work liberates! It is a phrase known as welcome note that was widely used by NAZI Germany in the concentration camps. The legendary Auschwitz is included beside the other camps like Dachau, Gross-Rosen, and Sachsenhausen. The slogan was physically made by the prisoners inside the camps.

Arbeit macht frei was taken from the title of the novel written by Lorenz Diefenbach in 1873. He was a German philologist. The novel tells about the criminals (gamblers and fraudsters) who were eventually finding the path to the right way through working activity. The Weimar government of Germany adapted it for the very first time in 1928. It was used to propagate the end-of-unemployment programme that was issued by the government at that time. There was also some visions that the slogan was used to mock the Medieval's slogan, Stadluft macht frei (city air brings freedom).

NAZI, as represented by Rudolf Hoss the first commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, used it in the entrance gate of every concentration camp. The prisoners, instead of being freed by working, they seemed to be confined in the concentration camps, waiting for the death. "Where is the freedom?", said the one of the prisoners.

The never ending labor has a spiritual freedom as a goal as argued by The Ethical Spectacle, an online journal webzine written by Jonathan Wallace. Such a forgery conducted to enhance the NAZI's hegemony.
